We will be selling pots by Numano Hideaki from 8pm on Friday 7th June.
Numano Hideaki has a pottery studio in the mountains of Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where he grows his own agaves, cacti, and tuberous plants, and from that experience he creates slit pots that are designed to prevent circling. He creates pottery with the intention of creating flower pots that are considerate of plants.
I first met Numano at the Mashiko Pottery Fair, held in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture in late April.
The Mashiko Pottery Market is a pottery event that lasts for about a week, where ceramic artists from all over the country gather and set up stalls.
A wide range of ceramic works are on sale, from plates to cups, vases and pots.
There are shops all over town, so there are more than you can visit in one day.
The HachiLab staff also enjoyed shopping and looked forward to meeting new artists.
I ended up visiting the shop of an artist who sells pots, and that's where I met Numano.

While a Hachi Lab staff member was repotting his plant, he thought it would be nice to have a ceramic pot with slits.
When I came across Numano's pots, I fell in love at first sight with how cool they were.
I couldn't talk for very long,
When purchasing a pot, be aware that slit pots are prone to limescale marks, which can be removed with citric acid.
When he explained this to me, I realized that he actually uses the plants, and I was happy to meet an artist who loves plants.
We really wanted to stock this product at HachiLab, so we are now happy to be selling it.
First, we will be releasing the "Black and White" series.
This is a piece that has been carbonized and fired.
Being conscious of preventing root rot of tuberous root plants,
It is characterized by a large slit.
Slit pots have excellent ventilation and drainage properties,
The roots near the slits sense the light and stop growing.
New roots come down from above and prevent circling.
It is said that this has the effect of allowing many roots to form.
Please note that there may be individual differences in texture (expression).
*When rinsing with water, limescale marks may appear on the slits.
If you are concerned, apply gauze or tissue soaked in citric acid.
Please try letting Quen soak in and then rubbing it off to remove the limescale.
